Class Profile: Spinning

We recently noticed that we've never shined the spotlight on Spinning, one of our core group-fitness classes, so we think that's it's high time that we get to it!

For every class, up to 30 i.d. members come together in our Spinning studio to jump, climb, jog and sprint on a stationary bike to the hottest hits of today and yesterday. Yes, it's a good time, but it's also a terrific workout that helps you burn calories. Depending on your body type and how hard you work, you may burn up to 900 calories during a 45-minute class.

Spinning is an anaerobic exercise, pulling energy from your reserves and building up your muscular endurance over an extended period of time. However, there are also aerobic benefits of Spinning. Spinning classes include both endurance and cardiovascular training, so at several points you will speed up to increase your heart rate. Heart health is an obvious benefit, as is lung capacity. As you work harder during Spinning, you will learn to work on controlled breathing. This may help you with anxiety and help lower your heart rate when you get into a situation where physical exertion begins to take your breath away.

One of the great things about Spinning is that you'll progress at your own pace. The amount of resistance you apply, as you gain strength and endurance, is up to you. Each of our state-of-the-art Spinner Blade Ion® bikes has a cycling compute and a resistance control knob within easy reach of the handle bars. It works something like switching gears. While instructors recommend the tempo and a specific gear, you determine what that gear feels like for you. Your computer will show you your immediate results -- heart rate, distance, wattage and calories. You'll see your progress after just a few classes!

"We offer Spinning classes every day of the week, and there's a good reason why it's so popular: It works!" says instructor Laurie Gold. "Spinning is an excellent, low-impact way to build endurance and cardiovascular strength while having a great time."
