Workout Matchmaker: I Want to Burn Fat

DESIGNED TO HELP YOU GET THE MOST OUT OF OUR GROUP-FITNESS PROGRAM: IN EACH COLUMN, WE'LL TAKE A SPECIFIC WELLNESS GOAL AND OUTLINE A FEW CLASSES THAT YOU CAN TAKE TO MEET THIS GOAL.

For this edition, we take another common wellness goal: cutting body fat. When we try to lose weight, we usually focus on the number we see on the scale. To lose weight, we need to do more than achieve a lower number on the scale -- we need to reduce our body mass index (BMI) that often significantly contributes to our overall weight.  

To reduce our BMI, like losing weight, we often have to change our lifestyle. Exercise is a big part of that lifestyle change, so let's go to the workout matchmaker for some advice....

Burn those calories

You can follow a variety of strategies to cut body fat -- everything from changing your diet to drinking more water and using healthful supplements. A sure-fire way to cut fat -- and lose weight -- is to simply burn more calories than you take in on a daily basis.

Start with Spinning

Spinning is one of i.d.'s most popular group-fitness classes for a reason -- it works! In just 45 minutes, you'll build cardiovascular strength and strengthen the muscles in your lower body while rocking out to some great tunes and riding on a stationary bike. You'll also burn lots of calories: In one 45-minute virgorous workout, a 150-pound person will shed about 700 calories -- calories that contribute to body fat.

  • Mondays at 9 am and 6:15 pm

  • Tuesdays at 6:15 pm

  • Wednesdays at 10 am and 6:15 pm

  • Thursdays at 6:15 am and 10 am

  • Fridays at 10 am

  • Saturdays at 8:15 am

  • Sundays at 8:30 am and 11 am

If Spinning isn't you're type

Not every match is made in heaven, so we've got other classes that can help you run faster too. Try Treadmill Bootcamp, a group-fitness class available on Tuesdays and Thursdays. In Treadmill Bootcamp, you'll run on a treadmill to build up your speed and endurance. And if that's not enought for you, we add in military-style bootcamp drills for strength, so that you can push yourself to your limits. Talk about burning calories and reducing body fat!
