Workout Matchmaker: I Want a Shapely Butt

"WORKOUT MATCHMAKER" IS
DESIGNED TO HELP YOU GET THE MOST OUT OF OUR GROUP-FITNESS PROGRAM: IN EACH COLUMN, WE'LL TAKE A SPECIFIC WELLNESS GOAL AND OUTLINE A FEW CLASSES THAT YOU CAN TAKE TO MEET THIS GOAL.

Here, we take a fitness goal that all of us at least secretly want to achieve: getting a shapely butt. Whether you're a guy or a gal, a nicely shaped derriere is something that most of us wish we had, but how do you get the kind of backside that would make a rapper want to rhyme about in his or her next hot track?

Getting results

Genetics aside, you can achieve a shapely butt through proper nutrition and by strengthening the three core muscles that make up the rear -- gluteus maximus, medius and minimus. Cardiovascular exercises that actively engage the glutes serve to further enhance the shape of the buttocks.

Start with Dancer's Body

We designed Dancer's Body to help you get a lean, strong body through a fusion of Pilates and Barre exercises. We'll target the hips, thighs, abs -- and of course the butt -- for a killer workout that will leave you sore, but wanting more.

You'll use ballet bars, exercise balls and light hand weights in a series of isometric drills, interval training and dance conditioning that help you reshape your body, elongate muscles, as well as burn fat and calories.

Why it's so good

This class works your body differently than a traditional weight training class. We concentrate on working the accessory muscles to firm and define your "problem areas" and give everything a lift.

When to find Dancer's Body

  • Tuesdays, 6:30 am, with Laurie Gold
  • Thursdays, 6:15 pm, with Brent Holten
  • Fridays, 9 am, with Laurie Gold
  • Saturdays, 10 am, with Brent Holten

If Dancer's Body isn't you're type

Not every match is made in heaven, so we've got other classes that can help you build up your butt muscles. Try Target Zone, a group-fitness class available on Wednesdays. This class emphasizes the trouble areas -- abs, thighs and butt -- using Bosu trainers, hand weights, body bars and resistance bands. You'll even build strength, burn calories and cut fat!

"Most people go to the gym because they want to achieve a specific fitness goal," says George Deoudes, a personal trainer and group-fitness instructor. "They want to build muscle, they want to lose body fat or they hope to get lean and tone for an upcoming special event, but many of them aren't sure how to get started. That's why we're here to help!"
